At Least Russia's President is for Russia

Getting hard not to be pro-Putin.

Exactly! You must have overheard me :) Whatever you can say for or against Putin, he appears to act in what he believes to be the best interests of the Russian people. As opposed to Obama who appears to act in the best interests of ... well ... Obama.

Good article, but with their negative birth-rate in Russia and the sub-50% stats of Russian males making the age of 60…..isn’t this an inherently doomed civilization? I’ll be worm-food before it happens, but it seems like Putin’s country is on the downward trend demographically speaking.

It's good to see you coming over to our side. When are you going to give the awful Clarissa a well-deserved verbal beatdown for her vile Russophobic rant a few weeks ago? (And give yourself a few smacks for sullying your blog with that shit without studying the matter further.)

I won't, I rather like Clarissa.

Clarissa is ethnic Ukrainian. They have good reasons for not wanting to be in Russia ... past genocide.

Hopefully they will let ethnic Russian regions go their own way and be done with it.

That being said, if you look at maps of oil shale and offshore oil in the Ukraine, you start to see what this dispute is really about.

I am ethnic Polish yet I can see that the world has changed and that a far better statesman than anyone in recent memory rules Russia now, so that excuse for anyone's Russophobia is pretty weak. Besides, even a conventionally well-respected and prominent figure like Winston Churchill knew and publicly expressed the fact that the Bolsheviks responsible for the Cheka's Red Terror of the early 20th century were overwhelmingly of a different and non-Russian ethnic group and had both the Russian and Ukrainian people at their mercy, "by the hair of their heads". I like the line in the article, "Please remember ‘Europe’ nowadays stands for soft Marxist totalitarianism and progressive universalism — hardly something to be identified with traditional European civilization."
It sums up the EU precisely. In Ireland we had previous votes on the Nice and Lisbon treaties. The first, yes first, results went against the powers that be and in their wisdom they decided to leave it a year and have another vote. But not before they scared the shit out of the populace so they eventually got the result they wanted. The great thing about empires is not "if" but "when" they disintegrate. I really hope I see the dissolution of the EU in my lifetime. Oh and they stole our fishing grounds in the Atlantic to boot!

@ Torgo, yeah I've always been confused by the fact that Ukrainians blame Russia for Holodomor despite the fact that many Ukrainians fought for the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War. They seem to forget (or lie) that they brought this destruction upon themselves. On another note, there a lot of Russians who died in the famine of 1932-1933, so it seems unfair to portray Russia as the aggressor, when pretty much everyone in the USSR was experiencing the effects of famine.
